The independent insurance agency business is about 100 years old and it seems to me some days that we haven’t changed very much in terms of how we do business in that whole time! I’ve been in the business myself about 20% of that time and have to admit that much of what I do today is the same as what I did decades ago.

How about you?

Is there anything really different in your business model compared to the past, or your competitors of the present?

As you may remember from earlier posts I’m a pilot. I fly for fun and transportation mostly. I try to fly in a very disciplined, traditional way. I work very hard at doing something remarkable, in an unremarkable way. But recently I had the opportunity to learn a little bit about aerobatics.

I got to see the world from an entirely different perspective. Upside down!

What I learned from that experience is that I can take the same tool I am used to using, an airplane, and do things with it that I’d never imagined. I could, with a change in perspective, create additional opportunities for myself as a pilot. I could, with no further investment on my part, magnify my capability and my rewards.

Aerobatics aren’t new. Like independent agencies its been around for 100 years. But it’s new to me. In the same way there are things you can do in, and with, an independent agency that haven’t been done before. By you. And the result can be not just a new perspective, but an increase in capability and in reward.

You may not want to fly upside down but how about taking a look at your business from a different perspective? Maybe a customers? How about a different generation’s risk management needs? Perhaps from the point of view of someone who just lost everything?

Try something different and see what happens!
